Journal #14

What has inspired me the most this year??

Well, I think a lot has inspired me. I believe that the first and foremost people that have inspired me are my teachers followed by my peers. I would not be the designer I am today without my teachers. I remember my first class in Type 01, and I remember sitting in the front and meeting Andrea. I remember being so nervous in Jeremy's class, always contemplating if I was in the right major. Is graphic design what I want to do for the rest of my life? I think my teachers have helped me realize that graphic design IS what I want to do, and I am excited to continue doing it.

My peers have always been the competition, and there were sometimes when I felt that my work was not good enough compared to the rest of the group's, especially last semester. I saw all of these different ideas splayed on the walls, and I thought, "why didn't I think of that?" It is intimidating to know that your peers will be the ones competing for the same jobs/internships that you will, and there are times when you want everyone around you to fail so you can be the best. But, especially, this semester, I feel that our sophomore class has really met each others' needs. We have been a support system for each other. My view on many of the people in my class have changed greatly since last semester, and I have been greatly influenced by their character and also by their work.

I am inspired by the people around me. I am inspired by all of the work they do. Graphic design must be important enough because we all stay up all night to work on it. There must be something genuine about it that brings out the best in us. I am excited for Review, I am excited for passing review and beginning junior year in just a couple months. I am confident in myself that the rest of my years at KU will be happy and satisfying.

Journal #13

Ted Talks

I have recently watched this talk for another class and I really enjoyed a lot of what the man said. It is interesting how we think about creativity because where does creativity and plagiarism tow the line? We think that we are being creative, but then again, we don't specifically know what others have been going.

And are we being creative? How has technology influenced negatively or positively the creativity of designers, writers, musicians, etc. Like John Phillips Sousa, we must figure out what hinders creativity and what helps.

Journal #12

I listened to Paula Scher, David Carson, and Milton Glaser.
I really enjoy listening to other designers that have been working on design in past years. They were the people that made graphic design in America what it is today. It excites me that I could possibly be one of those men and women that change the idea of graphic design for America.

I always wondered how designers are like as young designers. Where did they go to college? Does that make a difference? Do you have to get out of your own town to know how you will survive in Graphic Design?

I guess I am a little nervous about the future, and it would be nice to figure out how to succeed in this profession.
