Journal #14

What has inspired me the most this year??

Well, I think a lot has inspired me. I believe that the first and foremost people that have inspired me are my teachers followed by my peers. I would not be the designer I am today without my teachers. I remember my first class in Type 01, and I remember sitting in the front and meeting Andrea. I remember being so nervous in Jeremy's class, always contemplating if I was in the right major. Is graphic design what I want to do for the rest of my life? I think my teachers have helped me realize that graphic design IS what I want to do, and I am excited to continue doing it.

My peers have always been the competition, and there were sometimes when I felt that my work was not good enough compared to the rest of the group's, especially last semester. I saw all of these different ideas splayed on the walls, and I thought, "why didn't I think of that?" It is intimidating to know that your peers will be the ones competing for the same jobs/internships that you will, and there are times when you want everyone around you to fail so you can be the best. But, especially, this semester, I feel that our sophomore class has really met each others' needs. We have been a support system for each other. My view on many of the people in my class have changed greatly since last semester, and I have been greatly influenced by their character and also by their work.

I am inspired by the people around me. I am inspired by all of the work they do. Graphic design must be important enough because we all stay up all night to work on it. There must be something genuine about it that brings out the best in us. I am excited for Review, I am excited for passing review and beginning junior year in just a couple months. I am confident in myself that the rest of my years at KU will be happy and satisfying.

Ted Talks

I have recently watched this talk for another class and I really enjoyed a lot of what the man said. It is interesting how we think about creativity because where does creativity and plagiarism tow the line? We think that we are being creative, but then again, we don't specifically know what others have been going.

And are we being creative? How has technology influenced negatively or positively the creativity of designers, writers, musicians, etc. Like John Phillips Sousa, we must figure out what hinders creativity and what helps.

Journal #12

I listened to Paula Scher, David Carson, and Milton Glaser.
I really enjoy listening to other designers that have been working on design in past years. They were the people that made graphic design in America what it is today. It excites me that I could possibly be one of those men and women that change the idea of graphic design for America.

I always wondered how designers are like as young designers. Where did they go to college? Does that make a difference? Do you have to get out of your own town to know how you will survive in Graphic Design?

I guess I am a little nervous about the future, and it would be nice to figure out how to succeed in this profession.

Motion Piece for Class

So, I wanted to make sure I put most of my type in for today so I can design the rest of it. I think you can tell where my designs stopped.

Motion Refined

Journal #11, Design Matters: William Drenttel & Julie Lasky

As a graphic designer myself, I feel it is important to hear from other designers out in the world that have been designing far longer than I have. It is true that the world is all about technology but what will happen with print starts to become a thing of the past? I hope it never does. For me, it is hard to read a lot on a computer screen. Yes, I can spend most of my day designing on the computer, but when it comes to absorbing information, reading, understanding, learning, I find that a nice design reference book that I can hold in my hands is better. I am waiting for the day that the FDA will come out with new studies on how staring at the computer for hours upon end causes cancer. There must be something wrong with my macbook pro. It must be causing me some damage through all of the hours I spend on it.

But for now, I will continue to do what I love on my macbook and hope that one day I won't lose my eyesight.

It was interesting to listen to William Drentel and Julie Lasky talking about how design is going totally digital. Print, though it probably won't go completely under, is slowly leaving our society. And I do agree with a comment made thatt designers aren't just coming out of school to make corporate logos. Design is all about connecting with different parts of the world. I think, this generation, those design generation needs to understand that we are called to connect our world to other worlds in order to make this whole earth better.

GOOD Journal #10

I feel like Good is a place, first and foremost, where any person can come and understand they information they are trying to communicate to you. The videos, the mood, type, etc all showed my that their main objective is to be clear and concise as possible.

Some of the examples I have to back up my theory is:
first, their transitions. The transitions were not complicated. All seemed to connect, and when they needed to be read or focused on, the viewer had more time to read it or it stood out from the rest of the type, through being bold, or being a different color, etc.

Also, they used a lot of infographic pieces to emphasize the point they were trying to get across. Their type was not the only thing on the page. I feel like using vector images along with the type help keep the viewer's attention and keep them interacting the the motion piece.

Overall, I liked what I saw, but I would make sure in my motion piece that I focus on type and NOT graphics. I almost did that on one of my other typography pieces, and when I changed it to a purely typographical piece, it was a stronger design.

Try Number 2

I got some of the things from the last movie fixed, as in color and audio and such. Just doing 10 seconds takes such a long time!

Try #2:

Playing with Motion, Try #1

Okay, so my colors didn't render over, and one of my words, but other than that...it looks alright. I feel like the words match well enough with the sound, and I got the sound to render so yay! I couldn't get the audio to stop after 13 seconds...I thought I did but obviously I didn't.

Motion Graphics-- Journal #9

Motion that I liked:

Don't like:

I feel like I like the motion pieces that use the type as the main point. I am more of a simple person when it comes to design and that goes with my motion. Yes graphics can be used in motion but it should help emphasize the type. I really like the 3-D camera usage in some examples like example number one but I am thinking again using it with my motion piece.

I feel like I am having a problem choosing a part of my motion to use because I like so much of us so we will see what I decide to use. I think my motion piece will look mostly like numer 2 because I am using a Presidential Candidate speech so, being more patriotic would be a good idea. I feel like he is trying to create a sense of hope through his speech and I think a patriotic theme would be good. Adlia Stevenson reminds me of President Obama where he could inspire people through what he said and how he spoke those words. I want to show inspiration through my piece.

Transitions are mainly used through scale and color. If there is a stripe that comes onto the screen, the transition could be zooming onto that stripe and creating the new background. I think I will be using a lot of zooming to create those transitions.

Adlai Stevenson Speech More information

_ Who is speaking?

Adlai Stevenson

_ Why was/is the speech important to society?

Early in 1952, while Stevenson was still governor of Illinois, President Harry S. Truman decided that he would not seek another term as president. Instead, Truman met with Stevenson in Washington and proposed that Stevenson seek the Democratic nomination for president; Truman promised him his support if he did so. Stevenson at first hesitated, arguing that he was committed to running for a second gubernatorial term in Illinois. However, a number of his friends and associates (such as George Wildman Ball) quietly began organizing a "draft Stevenson" movement for President; they persisted in their activity even when Stevenson (both publicly and privately) told them to stop. When Stevenson continued to state that he was not a candidate, President Truman and the "bosses" of the Democratic Party looked for other prospective candidates. However, each of the other main contenders had a major weakness. Senator Estes Kefauver of Tennessee won most of the primaries, but he was unpopular with President Truman and other prominent Democrats, who saw him as a party maverick who could not be trusted. Senator Richard Russell, Jr. of Georgia was popular in the South, but his support of segregation and opposition to civil rights for blacks made him unacceptable to Northern and Western Democrats. Truman favored U.S. diplomat W. Averell Harriman, but he had never held elective office and was inexperienced in national politics. Truman next turned to his Vice-President, Alben Barkley, but at 74 years of age he was dismissed as being too old by labor union leaders. In the end Stevenson, despite his reluctance to run, remained the most attractive candidate heading into the Democratic Convention. At the 1952 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Stevenson, as the governor of the host state, was assigned to give the welcoming address to the delegates. His speech was so stirring and witty that it helped stampede his nomination. Despite his protestations, the delegates drafted him, and he accepted the Democratic nomination with a speech that according to contemporaries, "electrified the nation:"

_ Why do you feel in is important or interesting?

I feel this speech is a very moving speech, and I believe, like our president today, we need someone that can inspire us to move forward and, people like Adlai could have moved us forward in an inspired direction. I believe you can feel his heart and mind in this speech and that needs to be expressed.

_ What is the emotion, mood, tone, personality, feeling of the speech?

The emotion that I feel is excitement, motivation, determination, boldness, loyalty, pride. Very American patriotic feeling but still sophisticated through how he says it and what he says.

_ What is intonation, emphasis, what is loud, stressed, or soft. Where are there pauses...

He pauses a lot, he speaks slowly but in some parts he goes quicker in what he says.

_ What do you FEEL should be loud or soft, long pause or rushed?

He has great word choice, so I believe the phrases that call out on that specific word choice (alliteration for example) could be called out. Or phrases that call out his words on the American people.

_ Is there a call to action? When listening to it what are key/emphasized words?

This is the time when we had the Red Scare with communist Russia and he does call to us to stay strong and keep being Americans who strive for a better land and make it safer.

_ How does it make you feel?

It makes me feel patriotic. It makes me want to get out of bed and listen to him speak more.

_ How do imagine that the audience felt?

I imagine that the audience, liked the audiences of today, wanted to be inspired and to have hope in this time of terror and I feel he gave comfort to them. I bet they loved him, they were captivated by him.

_ Could there be another interpretation of the speech?

I think he gets his point across pretty clearl.

_ Write/find a short bio, of the person giving the speech.

Adlai Stevenson was an American politician, noted for his intellectual demeanor, eloquent oratory, and promotion of liberal causes in the Democratic Party. He served as the 31st Governor of Illinois, and received the Democratic Party's nomination for president in 1952 and 1956; both times he was defeated by Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower. He sought the Democratic presidential nomination for a third time in the election of 1960, but was defeated by Senator John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts. After his election, President Kennedy appointed Stevenson as the Ambassador to the United Nations; he served from 1961 to 1965. He died on 14 July 1965 in London, England after suffering a fatal heart attack at age 65.

Adlai Stevenson Speech

"I have tried to educate, if I have not succeeded altogether, I have certainly educated myself about these questions and about these wonderful human beings that are Americans. Just remember who you are, you are Americans. Your forbearers’ found a wilderness and they began to convert it into a fair land with only three weapons: with a Bible, an axe, and the plow. Nothing stayed them, neither the perils of death, nor wounds nor savage mountains, nor wide rivers, nor the unknown in which they plunged. They were of every racial stock and every religious belief and they brought something of the old country to the new country. And different thought they were, they became one. This is our heritage and this is our true glory. We are a people, I tell you, that is just beginning this high adventure on this continent. It is an adventure in which young, though we are, we have done this: our people have had more happiness and prosperity over a wider area and a longer time than men have ever had since they began to live in ordered society’s four thousand years ago. Since we have come so far, who shall be rash enough to set limits on our future progress, who shall say that since we have gone so far, we can go no farther? Who shall say that the American dream has ended? For myself, I believe that all we have done on this continent so far is but a prelude to a future in which we will become, not only a bigger people, but also a wiser people, a better people, an even greater people. I believe that we not only achieve a higher standard of living, but also a higher standard of life. Never forget this, there is little that we Americans cannot do if only we can imagine ourselves wanting to do it. Power alone is not enough, either is faith alone equal to the task. The future is to those who take it. We shall strike off the shackles that still bind the United States. It is the duty of the leaders to lead, the creative to create, of the daring to do. The free world expects leadership from us, its fate and our fate depends upon our leadership. The life or death issue of war or peace hangs upon it. We are 155 million strong. We are industrious, inventive, restless with the fires that burn within us. We are a free-striding people with a confident free-swinging stride that marks the American everywhere he goes upon this earth. We are conquerors of time and of distance, we have explored the awful jungles of matter and immerged with the powers of the exploding sun. Are cause is just, our heart is high, and let us then, I say, press forward, toward the new world that we can create in the name of America and of suffering humanity still in chains. Now you say words, beautiful words, but how do we do all of this, with a staggering budget of heavy taxes, surrounded by the communist menace, an enfeebled Europe, Asia in ferment, our boys in war, training for war? Well, I say nothing is easy, and the best things are the hardest. But consider what it was done at valley ford, what was done in the dark days of dissension and disaster, in the civil war, in the two world wars, when they very survival of western civilization trembled; an in the depression; there is nothing new only different, and all our troubles, all our immense difficulties, now and in the future, can I say, be solved if we have the will, the courage, the boldness to face them squarely. To use Seneca’s’ phrase, “Man is more than a rational animal.” And invoking the guidance of providence, rational men, animated by the destiny of greatness can think and can act and can do greatly. Thank you."

Sequence Exercise Reflection

I really liked the sequence exercise that we did on Wednesday. I feel like it does matter that you must study the use of different types, colors, leadings, and kearnings of type. It is essential to keep the interest of the viewer through the typography's size, shape, classification, etc.

I think this will help me with my next project because it will keep my book more interesting. It will make a historic speech into a more modern theme. I plan to make a moodboard for this book and hopefully, with the moodboard and my study of the speech, I will be able to correctly design a book fit for my speech.

Journal #8

After reading the article about the abundance of Futura users, I had to look up the font to make sure I was thinking of the right Modern font. After looking at this font, I could see why so many people like Futura. It is not only easy to read, but also geometric looking, and one of the more widely distributed fonts of its time. Any one could look at Futura and know it is Futura. But, though it has made its mark on Typography, I do see the reason why Ms. Helfand was writing this article. I do agree with the point that you must have a reason to use a specific type that goes along with the purpose of the poster. Typography, along with images, need to be carefully placed on the poster, layout, bookcover, etc. because every element needs to work with each other to convey the purpose of the piece.

Some fonts that could be used instead of Futura are: possibly Gill Sans, maybe Rotis Sans, and possibly interstate. They keep within the same shapes and I can see the crossover from Futura to one of these fonts being pretty painless and not messing up the rest of the design (that is to say that you made sure the type went with the design.)

Designing Under the Influence

It is often a hard question to answer if being inspired by another's design work could be considered plagiarism. Can someone own a design style? I agree with the author that "no" is the correct answer for that question but how far is too far?

I have wondered if design has gotten to the point, where if you design something purely from your own brain, is there a dozen more designs out in the world like or nearly like that one design? The answer is probably yes, and that is the problem with plagiarism. I feel like this day and age, it is hard to draw the line, and probably, we will just have to trust people to come up with their own designs on the honor's system because ultimately, the people that do plagiarize, will get caught and it will ruin their career for good.

No sympathy.

Refined Series

More Graphic Design Poster Ideas

I changed around the birds in the first two. The first poster, I made a different type of bird. Its style is more like the turkey, cut and paste like, and with both bird posters, I lessened the amount of birds displayed.

I tried to do a clipping back with the type and the swirly texture, but somehow I couldn't figure out how to do that. I did see if it could be a pattern or texture in the back of the all-type poster. I think it looks okay.

The last poster, I made the house bigger but I didn't really change a lot except the typography and where it was and how it is placed, and its size.

Revision Number Two, Graphic Design Doves

I did make my own dove so it shouldn't look as much like the "Dove" soap logo. I also thought it might be a good idea to use the symbol I used in the pattern poster and see what it looked like in this type of poster. I would also put a URL on these posters like I did the other posters posted before.

First Spring Break Graphic Design Refinements

Persona #2: Non-traditional Student who knows something about Christianity. I wanted to look at incorporating larger text with the pattern posters. I really considered typography more than I have done in the past posters.

Journal #6 What inspires Designers?

I wanted to look at mostly women designers and what they said that was inspiring to them. I watched Ellen Lupton, Jennifer Morla, Monica Nassif, Paula Scher. I also noticed that Chip Kidd was one of the designers asked so I watched him also. I was expecting them to talk about a specific graphic design that inspired them, but one woman talked about how Madison Square Garden was her inspiration. Another woman talked about how a spoon was her inspiration. Chip Kidd was a little more off topic but got around to saying that much inspires him everyday. And I think all of the designers that I looked at were right. Graphic design is not the only thing that inspires more graphic design. I look at things, patterns, people, places everyday and that should or does inspire design as much as past design work. I feel like I need to look at the world more and not just as graphic design for more inspiration. There is only a limited amount with what you can do with already design items.

If I was to answer those two questions, I would say that journals, books inspire me. I love book designing, I love words I love typography and how one can use typography for design. I love journals, I love how personal they can get, and I think graphic design should have that personal feeling in it. When you look at a good design you should be able to get a taste of who the designer is. I think people need personal things in order to relate and to understand them. Very famous designers like Milton Glaser gives his posters that personal/relatable touch that people understand and feel also. His "I LOVE NY" poster does that.

What design should solve next is that disconnection that people have to the needs and wants of the world. A man in the United States is not affected by the Earthquake in Haiti so he has no drive to help out. If we build connections and make the world personal to all, I think we will understand and help out more. I truly think the world will be a better place.

Final Flight Poster

Final Poster

Project Description:

Establishing order: Graphic design often relies on typography to communicate order, information, and systems. The goal of this project is to make things easy to read, navigate and understand. As you learned in typography one, the foundation for creating an clear informational structure is a a strong typographic hiearchy. Type size, wieght, and color are the the first steps. Graphic elements (lines, arrows, grids) and page structure are often used to aid in establishing a clear hierarchy.

Overview:

Overall, I enjoyed this project. It went pretty quickly but I am happy with what I have to show for it. The first week was tough because what I was doing was not what I should have been doing. Ultimately, though, it did get me to my final project that I like a lot. I think it does look like a blueprint of the airplane, and I like the fact that I didn't even use an airplane for the timeline.

If I could change anything, I most likely would say that I would want more time, but somehow I feel like if I had more time on it, it might get worse? There is only so much you can do with a timeline and I feel like mine has reached its peak here. If I had more time, I would have overworked it. Simplicity is key.

I liked the fact that we all had a choice on what we wanted to do. I liked the fact that the topics of the timeline were all so very different that I know everyone is going to have a different design for their timeline. I also liked the fact that we have the option of doing a poster or an accordion book. Though I really wanted to make an accordion book, I feel like my design works better as a poster.

If I could do this again, I wouldn't change anything because I learned a lot and I do feel like I developed as a designer. I didn't use someone else's picture! I didn't need to steal a picture! yay! That was one of Bruce Mau's rules that I needed to work at and I feel like this project showed me that I can do a good design without utilizing a Google image.

Refined Poster for Typography Process Book

The first idea I worked with is trying to use the accordion book idea. I wanted to see if I could somehow find a way to use my tracing paper with this project. I learned how to print on it and I thought it looked really good.

This would be the regular paper that I print on and the tracing paper would have the dates on it and that would outline the plane. I like that idea of using layers a lot.

The next images are poster ideas.

The problem with these posters were where to place the dates. The dates are easy enough to follow until I put the rest of the dates on the other plane. It was also noted that they were way to busy. No hierarchy and no one knows where to start on the plane.

I did think about make using only one plane and putting the dates around it. So I did that.

And then I thought, well, why do I have to have that plane in the middle? Could it be a negative image that the text makes? So I took out the plane.

And amazingly, I liked it better without the plane than with. I guess less is more! ha! I showed all of these posters to my small group and they agreed with me. But, they didn't like the colors (or lack there of) I was using. They suggested a blueprint idea where the whole thing is blue and the type is white. I really liked the idea and that is where I found my final poster idea.

Timeline Process

After looking at several different photos for the History of Flight, I felt like I needed to make an accordion book. It could be an extreme horizontal timeline or vertical. The poster idea didn't interest me very much. I didn't think it went very well with what I wanted to focus on with the history of flight.

I talked to Andrea and I showed her my ideas about the wind patterns, drafting, and altitude and she thought that I should focus my attention on a draft idea. I was glad of her support with that one because I thought the drafting idea was my favorite idea and I didn't think as many people would think about that.

Next class I brought my ideas to Typography. Unfortunately, I think what happened with my designs is that my timeline focused too much on photos.

This would be the front cover on the accordion book. The "100 Years of Flight" and the plane would be the front and the rest would be folded over. When you opened this up you would see this:

Obviously as you can tell, it is way to many photos. This is the page that took FOREVER to print also. Sorry guys who were trying to print after me...

Another idea was using the same title page, but instead of a time line you see, you would open up the book and there would be little books inside that show the timeline dates for ten-year intervals

This is a very rough draft of what I was thinking about but I felt it got my point across.

Before I talked to Andrea that day, I started again to refine and think of things that I could do to make this more of a typographic project than a info-graphic project:

  • more type than graphics you can use graphics but not as much
  • drafting
  • tracing paper
  • lines, rulers, numbers
  • as sketches, not pictures
  • thick vs thin lines
Then I thought of maybe, I should use one large drafting image and using the lines within the structure of the airplane, I show the timeline. So the timeline would be apart of one airplane. I liked this idea better than using a lot of different images for so many different dates. I also thought utilizing thick and thin lines and rulers or a map key would also help make this more typographic.

Because I started to think more in this way, I asked Andrea if I should consider making posters instead of a book. She said that would be good, but the one problem with the posters is that I could not use the tracing paper to create layers that I would be doing with the accordion book.

The next day I came to class with more files that were primarily posters.

Beginning Process of Typography Timeline Project

At the beginning of this project, I immediately knew I wanted to design a timeline for the History of Flight. I have always wanted to learn how to fly and my boyfriend does fly, so planes have always been a part of my life. I connected with the History of Flight and with the help of my peers I started a list of items flight related that could demonstrate a timeline.

Word List:
airport graphic
early 1900s theme
purpose, i.e. war
basic structure
mechanical
drafting
technical
flight simulator
altitude
distance traveled
horizon line
dashboard
lift, drag
path, trajectory
runway
wings
cloud
birds (things that fly)
circle, engine
propeller
safety cards
rows of seats
how planes look over the years/morph
insects
wind patterns
man floating
Wright Brothers
captain hat
wings
log for flight
map
radar
connection lines
airport layout
cropped/window
aerial view, patterns
peanut, pretzel bags
lights aisle/ pathways
side of jets/windows
dandelions
arrows
focused on the people that flew
paper airplane
3-D makes itself into a paper airplane
Kite ribbon
layer drafting

Some of the questions that I thought about is, how to show time through flight. Could the time be linear? Could it be more info-graphic? Time vs Distance? I knew that because this was a Typographic project, I needed to steer clear of a more info-graphic approach. Some of the words in the word list would deal primarily with images more than type so I tried to steer clear of that.
The major ideas that I wanted to focus more on is the idea of using drafting to demonstrate the history of flight. I also liked the idea of using distance with a paper airplane idea. I also liked the idea of using altitude or using distance traveled up to measure a timeline. I also liked the idea of using wind patterns and arrows to show direction of the timeline. Some of the photo graphs I looked at for ideas are as followed:
